Heat staining looks fantastic on melta and flamer weapons, and the effect is simple to achieve. Just make sure you let the previous layer dry before applying the next (I’ll remind you). Here’s a quick guide.
Step 1: Preparation
Start by base coating with GW Leadbelcher and give it an all-over black wash.
Step 2: Blue Wash
Wash the end nearest the barrel with GW Drakenhof Nightshade.
Step 3: Red Wash
WAIT FOR THE BLUE TO DRY!
Paint a stripe using GW Carroburg Crimson about half way along the barrel. This should overlap the blue – that’s what gives you the blend.
Step 4: Sepia Wash
WAIT FOR THE RED TO DRY!
Paint the rest of the barrel with GW Seraphim Sepia, overlapping the red stripe in Step 3.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
A light drybrush of Vallejo Magic blue (GW Teclis Blue will do just as well) on the edges nearest the barrel makes the blue pop.
And you’re done! Didn’t I say this was quick and easy?
Here’s what it looks like on a larger scale:
