On to another themed room from the Dungeons and Lasers: Caves set, this time the Goblin Lair. In typical goblin fashion, it’s a messy place, with jagged bits of wood nailed together, grisly totems and unsettling icons.
The enclave is sizeable but makes quite a centrepiece for the room. Depending on the encounter, I might take or leave this piece, or perhaps use it as a building the players can enter, then just remove it from the map. This room also has a few more bits of scatter than others with plenty of decorations to hang from the wall like goblin masks, bones and totems. Availability still seems a bit limited for this set but Wayland Games have some.

Priming was key to getting this painted in a reasonable time. If a piece was mostly wood, I went with Army Painter Oak Brown primer. If it was mostly rock, I went with Colour Forge Standard Grey. From there, I could fill in the other parts with GW Mechanicus Standard Grey for rock or Army Painter Oak Brown for wood, then cover the lot with GW Agrax Earthshade and get to drybrushing.
I’ve covered the process for the rocky bits here, so I’ll talk about the wood. After the wash, it’s a heavy drybrush of GW Mournfang Brown, then a lighter drybrush with GW Baneblade Brown. Since I was drybrushing the rocks with Baneblade Brown anyway, I just allowed myself to be messy with it. I applied some Dirty Down Moss Effect here and there, but found it to be too subtle over the dark wood. A drybrush over the moss effect with GW Elysian Green, followed by lighter drybrush with GW Ogryn Camo helped bring those areas out and break up the wall of brown.

The details also got a quick and easy job. Ropes, bones and strings got a base coat of white, followed by a single layer of GW Skeleton Horde Contrast. Metals are just Vallejo Gunmetal Grey washed with GW Agrax Earthshade. Fabrics are a base coat of GW Mephiston Red washed with GW Carroburg Crimson. Normally I’d go in for some layered or drybrushed highlights but since this is a goblin lair where things are a bit dingy, I felt it would look more appropriate with a dirtier, duller look.

With 2 themed rooms and the core set done, the caves are becoming well populated. Just the spidery room to go, then I’ll check out what scatter terrain and traps I can find in the stretch goals.
