While I welcomed the proportion changes to the latest Deathwing Knights kit, the lack of bling and particularly the maces and shields fell way short of the mark for me. Instead of moaning about it though, I headed to the bits box and found some from the old kit for some conversion goodness. Since the old kit is no longer available, you’re left with eBay, bits sites, or 3D prints to get hold of the maces and shields I’m using here. Fortunately for me, I had loads of old Dark Angels bits, and these were easy conversions.
For the Knight Master, I wanted to use the old Flail of the Unforgiven, part because it looks great and part to help him stand out from the rest of the squad. This was as easy as a straight arm swap – just glue the old flail arm onto the new body and done. I actually kept the new shield on this one – there’s just the one with the robed angel design in the new kit which keeps the old aesthetic.
The Deathwing Knights themselves took only a little more effort. Here’s how to do it.
Build the mace arm as usual, using the new kit, then chop the hand off at the wrist. I used some clippers for this job, then just smoothed it off with a craft knife.

Use some plastic glue to attach the hand carrying the old mace and glue the arm to the new body. Easy. The shield arm was also just a straight swap from the old kit – no mucking about necessary, just glue the whole arm on.

After that, get painting. Here’s how a couple of mine turned out.
